Jenny & Jon’s Relaxed Southampton Wedding

Westgate Hall, Southampton, Wedding

There’s something quietly special about a wedding that doesn’t try too hard. Jenny and Jon’s day in Southampton was exactly that — relaxed, full of character, and completely centred around the people that matter most.

A Historic Ceremony at Westgate Hall

Westgate Hall is one of those venues that immediately gives a sense of occasion. Set within Southampton’s medieval walls, it has a timeless, slightly vintage feel — perfect for a couple like Jenny and Jon who wanted something meaningful without being overly formal. The ceremony itself was intimate and full of warmth. No fuss, no over-staging — just genuine moments that don’t need direction. There’s a lovely quality to these sorts of ceremonies as a photographer. You’re not managing the moment, (not that I would even try!), you’re simply watching it unfold.

A Short Walk, A Change of Pace

One of the things I loved most about this wedding was the transition between venues. No cars, no complicated logistics — just a short walk through Southampton with friends and family. It gave the whole day a really social, almost European feel. Guests chatting, laughing, drifting naturally from one part of the day to the next. It wasn’t a long onerous walk, just a 10 minute stroll skirting the city walls.

These in-between moments often end up being some of the most memorable, as these are when your guests may have the chance to converse and catch up for potentially the first time in a long time!

It also allowed for some great couple portraits - there are some really nice spots along the city wall.

A Laid-Back Reception at Dancing Man Brewery

The reception at the Dancing Man Brewery couldn’t have suited them better. It’s a venue full of character; exposed brick, warm light, and just the right amount of informality. It allowed the day to flow naturally into an evening of good food, drinks, and plenty of laughter - the celebrations can carry on well up to midnight.

Jenny and Jon clearly prioritised atmosphere over tradition, and it paid off. Nothing felt rushed or overly structured. People settled in, conversations lingered, and the whole space felt alive in a very easy, unforced way.

There was a subtle vintage thread running through the day — not in a styled, Pinterest-heavy way, but in the tone of it all. The setting, the pace, the way people interacted. It all felt slightly nostalgic, in the best sense. As a photographer, those are the weddings that tend to produce the most honest images. When people feel comfortable, they stop performing — and that’s when the real moments appear.

Natural Moments Over Posed Ones

Jenny and Jon weren’t interested in spending hours away from their guests, and that’s always something I encourage. We kept portraits simple and quick, making the most of the surroundings without turning it into a production. The result is a gallery that feels true to the day — full of movement, connection, and personality.

Where possible, I prefer to take portraits in more natural and less posed locations. This venue had plenty of options!
